Garrison Point Beach Clean: A Morning of Conservation and Unexpected Finds

Published on 5 April 2025 at 06:08

Yesterday, the 4th April 2025, I joined the Great British Spring Clean at Garrison Point Beach, organized by Swale Borough Council. The event was a great reminder of the power of community action—and also of how much of a trek it is to the meeting point!

Before setting off, I treated myself to a sneaky McDonald's—a little fuel for the long walk ahead. With a full stomach and a litter picker in hand, I made my way down to the beach, ready to make a difference.

It wasn’t long before I stumbled across an unexpected find—a coconut. Not exactly what I expected to see on a Kent beach! Even more surprising, I came across a starfish in need of saving, so I carefully returned it to the sea, a small but rewarding moment in the morning.

Of course, the main mission was cleaning up, and I managed to collect 3.1kg of waste. Across the entire team, we filled over 18 bags, amounting to an estimated 55kg of litter removed from the beach. Every bottle, can, and plastic fragment we removed was a step toward a cleaner coastline.

Events like these highlight the impact that small efforts can have when people come together for a shared cause. A massive thank you to everyone who showed up and did their part! If you’re interested in getting involved, keep an eye out for future clean-up events—you never know what you might find along the way.
