From Burial to Bones: Processing Ginger Cat’s Remains

After much care and attention, Ginger Cat has finally moved from being a body in a box to the beginning of the bone processing stage. Going through the mesh bag he was stored in, I believe I’ve managed to gather all of his bones. Unfortunately, the skull showed significant damage, likely due to how long it had been buried. Then again, I wasn’t sure what condition the skull was in before I buried him, so I’m learning as I go.

I’ve now cleaned all of the bones, washing them in warm, soapy water to remove any remaining dirt and grime.

Next, I began the degreasing process to extract the natural oils that accumulate in bones. This step can take time, depending on the amount of grease, how frequently the water is changed, and whether or not I forget about it! For this, I simply place the bones in a bucket or tub of water with dish soap, changing the water once it turns cloudy or yellow. I try not to let the bones sit in greasy water for too long.

As for the final result, I’m still deciding. I plan to keep the skull, or what’s left of it, and might create another personal yes/no bone set with the leg bones. The rest of the bones could be sold, but I suspect most of them will stay in my collection for now.
